Mud bricks were a practical and common construction material in Mesopotamia, where stone was scarce, so early monumental architecture often took the form of layered, sun-dried bricks built into elevated platforms. The ziggurat fits this pattern perfectly: a tall, stepped platform topped by a shrine, built from mud bricks and plastered for a durable finish. These structures are among the oldest large-scale monuments created from mud brick, dating to the 3rd–2nd millennium BCE in cities like Ur and Uruk.

Pyramids, while ancient, are primarily built from stone blocks and not mud bricks, so they don’t share the same construction material. Dolmens and megaliths are also stone monuments, consisting of large stones arranged in prehistoric configurations rather than mud-brick constructions.
